Headache Treatment Geelong

When Your Head Won't Stop Pounding

Headaches are exhausting, aren't they?

You can't concentrate at work. You're irritable with your family. You can't enjoy your day because there's this constant pressure or throbbing in your head. You take painkillers, but they either don't work or you're taking them so often you're worried about side effects.

If you're dealing with frequent headaches in Geelong, you've probably tried everything. Rest, hydration, avoiding triggers, over-the-counter meds. But they keep coming back.

Here's what most people don't realize: many headaches—especially tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches—are caused by problems in your neck and upper back. And that's something chiropractic care can actually fix.

I'm Dr. Nic, and I've been helping Geelong locals with headaches at Latrobe Terrace Chiropractic since 2009. Not every headache needs chiropractic care, but if yours is related to neck tension, posture, or muscle tightness, we can help.

What Type of Headache Do You Have?

Not all headaches are the same. The treatment that works depends on what type you're dealing with.

The most common types of headaches I see in Geelong patients:

Tension headaches. Feels like a tight band around your head or pressure at your temples and forehead. Usually caused by stress, poor posture, or muscle tension in your neck and shoulders. This is the most common type.

Cervicogenic headaches. These start in your neck and radiate to your head, usually one-sided. Feels like a dull ache or pressure that starts at the base of your skull and moves forward. Caused by neck dysfunction—this is where chiropractic really shines.

Migraines. Intense, throbbing pain, usually on one side of your head. Often accompanied by nausea, light sensitivity, or visual disturbances. While I can't cure migraines, chiropractic care can reduce their frequency and intensity for some people.

Cluster headaches. Severe pain around one eye, with watering and redness. These come in clusters over weeks or months. Less common, and usually need specialist care.

Sinus headaches. Pressure and pain in your forehead, cheeks, and around your eyes. Usually accompanies a cold or sinus infection. If it's truly a sinus headache, you might need to see your GP.

Medication overuse headaches. Caused by taking painkillers too frequently. Your body rebounds when the medication wears off, causing another headache. Breaking this cycle often requires reducing medication gradually.

The most important thing? Figuring out which type you have, because that determines the best treatment approach.

How Do You Know If Your Headaches Are Neck-Related?

If your headaches are caused by neck dysfunction (cervicogenic), chiropractic care can make a huge difference.

Here's how to tell if your headaches are coming from your neck:

Your headache starts at the base of your skull and moves forward

Neck stiffness or pain accompanies your headaches

Your headache is triggered by certain neck movements or positions

Headaches are worse after sitting at a desk, driving, or looking at screens

You get relief from neck stretches or massage

The pain is usually on one side (though not always)

You don't have nausea or visual disturbances (those suggest migraines)

If that sounds like you, there's a good chance your neck is contributing to your headaches. And that's something we can assess and treat.

You should book in if you're experiencing:

  • Frequent headaches (more than a few times per month)

  • Headaches that are affecting your work, sleep, or quality of life

  • You're taking painkillers regularly and want an alternative

  • Your headaches are getting worse or more frequent

  • Neck pain or stiffness along with your headaches

  • Here's what needs immediate medical attention:

  • Sudden, severe headache unlike anything you've experienced before (thunderclap headache)

  • Headache with fever, stiff neck, confusion, or vision changes

  • Headache after a head injury

  • Headache with weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking

If you've got any of those red flags, go to the emergency department or call 000.

How I Treat Headaches at Our Geelong Clinic

Headaches are complex, so I take time to understand what's going on.

Here's what happens when you come in:

First Visit: Assessment & Treatment

We'll talk about your headaches. When do they happen? How often? What makes them better or worse? Have you noticed any patterns?

Then I'll do a thorough examination:

Neck and upper back assessment to check for joint dysfunction and muscle tension

Posture analysis because forward head posture and rounded shoulders are major contributors to headaches

Range of motion testing in your neck

Neurological screening to rule out anything more serious

Muscle palpation to identify tight or tender areas in your neck, shoulders, and upper back

If I think your headaches are neck-related and chiropractic can help, we'll start treatment that day. If I think you need imaging or a referral to a neurologist or your GP, I'll be upfront about it.

Treatment Approach

For tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches in Geelong, my treatment includes:

Chiropractic adjustments. Specific adjustments to your neck and upper back to restore proper movement and reduce nerve irritation. This is particularly effective for cervicogenic headaches.

Soft tissue therapy. Hands-on work to release tight muscles in your neck, shoulders, and upper back. Your suboccipital muscles (at the base of your skull), upper traps, and levator scapulae often need attention.

Postural correction. If your headaches are related to desk work or phone use, we'll address your posture and give you exercises to maintain it.

Trigger point therapy. Releasing specific tight spots in your muscles that refer pain to your head.

Lifestyle and ergonomic advice. Simple changes to your workspace, sleeping position, stress management, or hydration can make a big difference.

Home exercises. Stretches and strengthening exercises to support your neck and reduce headache frequency.

What About Recovery Time?

Honest answer: it varies.

Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches: Many people notice improvement within 2-4 weeks of consistent treatment. Some feel better after just a few sessions.

Migraines: If chiropractic helps, you'll usually see a reduction in frequency or intensity over 4-8 weeks. Not everyone responds, but many do.

Chronic daily headaches: These take longer because we're addressing underlying dysfunction that's built up over months or years. Expect 6-12 weeks to see significant improvement.

I'll give you a realistic timeline after your first assessment. And if we're not seeing progress after a reasonable trial, I'll refer you to another specialist.

FAQs About Headache Treatment in Geelong

Can a chiropractor help with headaches?

Yes, for certain types. Chiropractic is highly effective for tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches (headaches caused by neck problems). Some people with migraines also find relief. However, if your headaches are caused by something more serious, I'll refer you to the appropriate specialist.

How much does headache treatment cost in Geelong?

First visit is $65 (special offer). Follow-up visits are $65 also. Most private health funds cover chiropractic through HICAPS, so you can claim on the spot.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly online at chirogeelong.au or call 5224 1838.

How many visits will I need?

Depends on your headache type and how long you've had them. Acute tension headaches might improve in 2-4 visits. Chronic headaches might need 8-12 visits over a few weeks. I'll give you an estimate after assessing you.

Can chiropractic help with migraines?

Sometimes. While I can't cure migraines, many people find that chiropractic care reduces the frequency or intensity of their migraines. It's worth a try, especially if you also have neck tension.

Will you adjust my neck?

If it's appropriate, yes. Neck adjustments for headaches are usually gentle and specific. I'll explain what I'm doing and make sure you're comfortable before proceeding.

What if chiropractic doesn't help my headaches?

If we're not seeing improvement after a few weeks, I'll refer you to your GP or a neurologist for further investigation. Not every headache responds to chiropractic, and that's okay.

Should I stop taking my headache medication?

Not without talking to your GP first. Initially, you might continue your medication while we work on addressing the underlying cause. Many people are able to reduce or stop medication as their headaches improve, but that's a decision to make with your doctor.
